VSL Solo Strings Bundle
This bundle focuses on the solo instruments violin, viola, cello and double bass. It represents the most comprehensive and sophisticated solo string edition ever created, including more than 100 GB of pristine samples. Solo Strings I covers a tremendous variety of different articulations in all imaginable nuances (e.g., spiccato, richochet, col legno, snap pizzicato, tremolo, glissando, trills, and artificial harmonics), providing for stunning realism and authenticity in conjunction with the Vienna Instruments engine’s algorithms. Solo Strings II offers most of these articulations, played con sordino (muted). Solo Violin 2 and Solo Cello 2 offer additional instruments with different timbres, played by the concertmaster and the principal cellist of the Synchron Stage Orchestra.
See below for further details on the products in the bundle.
Solo Strings 1
Solo Strings I contains articulations such as “zigane”, the leisurely “smeared” portamentos, which are particularly impressive as Interval Performances with the Vienna Instruments player engine’s algorithms. Additional “harsh” articulations are performed with an especially raw, almost brutal attack, and are now available as superbly effective Interval and Repetition Performances. There are also special Performance Trills, repetitions in spiccato and ricochet articulations, sustains with fading vibrato, ponticello, sul tasto, and numerous natural and artificial harmonics.
Solo Strings 2
This Vienna Instruments Collection is the sequel to Solo Strings I, offering all-new and sonic subtleties. Solo Strings II contains many of the playing techniques that the first Collection includes, but played “con sordino” (with mutes).
Playing with mutes dampens the transmission of energy from the strings to the body of the instrument and softens or darkens the sound. Muted string instruments lend themselves well to soft, intimate arrangements and solo parts, and provide nuanced variations to any kind of musical style with their different structure of overtones and harmonics. Only wooden mutes crafted by a special instrument maker have been used in order to fit perfectly to the bridge of each instrument.
Solo Violin 2
This solo instrument was played by Dimitrie J. Leivici, concert master of Vienna’s Synchron Stage Orchestra and acclaimed Hollywood studio violinist who played on over 1,000 movie scores, including classics such as Avatar, Titanic, Pirates of the Caribbean, Toy Story, and Indiana Jones.
This instrument was recorded at VSL’s Silent Stage and offers an alternative to the solo violin included in the Solo Strings I Collection. It is the perfect choice if you’re looking for two different timbres of the same instrument, e.g., for solo and chamber music instrumentations, such as in a string quartet.
Solo Cello 2
Solo Cello 2 was played and recorded at VSL’s own Silent Stage. The extensive range of articulations leaves nothing to be desired: Staccatos, Portamento and Legato Performances as well as Legato Repetitions in various speeds, sustains with and without vibrato as well as with progessive vibrato, tremolos, Trill Performances in four intervals (from half-tone to major third trills), pizzicatos, sforzatos and sforzatissimos, fp and pfp.
